The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) released a Short-Term Energy Outlook report, in which we predict that electricity consumption will increase by 1% in 2026 and 3% in 2027. This will be the first consecutive four-year growth since 2005-07 and the strongest four-year growth since the turn of the century. The rise in electricity consumption in our forecast is mainly driven by the growing power demand in the commercial and industrial sectors. Solar power generation is expected to contribute the most in terms of new power generation during the forecast period. We project an increase of 69 gigawatts in solar capacity, leading to a 21% increase in solar electricity generation in both 2026 and 2027. We predict that natural gas electricity generation will remain steady in 2026 and increase by 1% in 2027. Coal-fired power generation will decrease by 9% in 2026 and by less than 1% in 2027.
