Central bank governors from several major countries around the world issued a joint statement on Tuesday in support of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, who was threatened by the Trump administration with criminal charges. In the statement, the European Central Bank, the Bank of England, and nine other central bank governors said, "We stand fully united with the Federal Reserve System and its chairman Powell." They added, "The independence of central banks is the cornerstone of maintaining price, financial, and economic stability, and is in the interest of the people we serve." The U.S. government's criminal investigation ostensibly involves the renovation of the Federal Reserve headquarters, but Powell called it a "pretext" aimed at giving the president influence over interest rates.
