U.S. Secretary of State: The U.S. is willing to facilitate dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand.
The United States Department of State released a statement on the 25th, saying that Secretary of State Pompeo had a phone call with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, expressing the willingness of the US to facilitate dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand to ensure peace and stability between the two countries. The brief statement stated that Pompeo reiterated the necessity of fully implementing the peace agreement signed earlier this year between Cambodia and Thailand. President Trump spoke with the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand on the 12th and later stated that the leaders of the two countries agreed to a ceasefire starting that evening. However, the Thai side denied this the following day. The conflict at the Cambodian-Thai border continues. Pompeo stated in a year-end press conference last week that the US is cautiously optimistic that Cambodia and Thailand could begin the ceasefire on the 22nd or 23rd.
