Canadian Prime Minister Kaney has appointed former BlackRock executive Mark Wiseman as the ambassador to the United States. This move comes on the eve of major trade negotiations aimed at leveraging his extensive investment management experience to handle relations with the Trump administration. Wiseman will replace Kirsten Hillman, who has held the position since 2019 and has announced her departure in the new year. The Kaney government is currently facing tense scrutiny of the USMCA, a key treaty regulating trade among the three North American countries. The Trump administration has repeatedly expressed a desire to modify or even threatened to withdraw from the agreement. Despite negotiations on this issue between the three countries this fall, the future process remains uncertain. Wiseman, a close friend of Kaney's, has no diplomatic experience but has a strong background in the field of financial investments.
