The Hong Kong and Shenzhen coordination department has arranged customs clearance arrangements for the New Year's holiday canceled the fireworks show and replaced it with a New Year's countdown event.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government recently held a cross-departmental working group meeting on festival arrangements to comprehensively coordinate and supervise the preparation work of various government departments in the SAR for receiving visitors during the New Year's Eve and New Year holidays. It was announced at the meeting that this year's New Year's Eve countdown event will cancel the fireworks display and instead be held in the pedestrian zone of Chater Road in Central for residents and visitors to convey positive energy, care, and blessings of peace. In response to the New Year's Eve countdown event, the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Shenzhen Municipal Government have discussed extending the operating hours of the border services on New Year's Eve. Mainland border departments have already submitted the necessary procedures for approval to the national border authorities, with details to be announced soon. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge crossing and the Lok Ma Chau/Huanggang crossing will remain open 24 hours on New Year's Eve as usual. The cross-departmental joint command center composed of the Hong Kong Police Force, the Immigration Department, Hong Kong Customs, and relevant departments will be activated from December 31, 2025 to January 4, 2026 to monitor the border situation in real-time and maintain close communication with mainland border departments through established hotlines and instant notification mechanisms to ensure smooth operation of the border checkpoints. In terms of public transportation arrangements, the MTR Corporation will extend the services of the East Rail Line to and from the Lo Wu Station to accommodate services at the Lo Wu border crossing. Most MTR lines will operate overnight on New Year's Eve. The Transport Department will also enhance cross-border transport services connecting various border crossings, including increasing shuttle buses on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang cross-border shuttle buses, and cross-border direct buses.
