According to the New York Times, 25 Democratic lawmakers in the United States have sent a letter to the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Commerce requesting an investigation into whether Commerce Secretary Lute Nick improperly promoted an artificial intelligence data center project for the benefit of his family members. The letter, led by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Representative Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania, was sent out on Thursday. A recent investigation revealed ongoing overlaps between Lute Nick's official actions since taking office and his former company's business. Lute Nick previously transferred his role in the network of companies under Cantor Fitzgerald to his two sons, who currently jointly hold controlling shares with four children. Several of Lute Nick's official actions intersect with projects involving family-affiliated companies. For example, in negotiations with South Korea regarding tariffs, he requested South Korea to invest billions of dollars to support American industries while Cantor and Newmark are assisting in financing a proposed AI data center in Amarillo, Texas, which is seeking some of the Korean funds.
