The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government strongly opposes the G7 foreign ministers and the EU High Representative's defamation and smear campaign against Jimmy Lai's case.

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government today strongly expresses its dissatisfaction and opposition regarding the defamation and smearing by the seven-member countries of the Group of Seven (G7) and the High Representative of the European Union on the conviction of Jimmy Lai for crimes endangering national security and the strict adherence of the court to the law and evidence. A spokesperson for the SAR government stressed that any attempt by foreign or external forces to discredit Hong Kong with the conviction of Jimmy Lai will only be futile and will not succeed. The SAR government strongly demands that the relevant countries immediately cease actions that do not comply with international law and basic principles of international relations, and immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs, which are purely internal matters of China. The SAR government will continue to fulfill its duties steadfastly and uphold national security.
