"Korean version of Amazon" Coupang experiences data leakage, almost all adult information in Korea leaked.
It is alleged that the suspect illegally obtained personal information of nearly all adult South Koreans: names, phone numbers, and even access codes to residential buildings. This is one of the largest data breaches in recent years, causing significant damage to its target company - Coupang, known as the "South Korean version of Amazon" - and sparking lawsuits, government investigations, and calls to increase penalties for such leaks. The data breach went unnoticed for nearly five months until a customer reported suspicious activity on November 18, catching Coupang's attention. Initially, Coupang, founded by a Korean-American entrepreneur, claimed to have experienced a data "leak" affecting around 4,500 customer accounts. However, within days, the e-commerce company revised this number, revealing that up to approximately 34 million user accounts in South Korea were exposed - more than 90% of the country's working-age population. After South Korean regulatory agencies objected to Coupang's previous wording, the company started referring to the incident as a data "breach."
