Li Ka-Chung: Thoroughly investigate the cause of the Tai Po fire, the independent committee may request government departments to assist.
According to a news report from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, on December 4, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam, delivered a speech at a seminar on "National Constitution Day 2025," expressing her deepest condolences to the victims of the tragic fire at the Homantin Estates in Tai Po, and extending heartfelt sympathy and concern to their families and the displaced residents who lost their homes.
She stated that the fire caused significant casualties, and the entire Hong Kong society was deeply saddened. The SAR Government has made every effort in firefighting and rescue operations, immediately mobilizing various departments, rescue teams, and social forces to arrange emergency accommodation for the affected residents, provide "one household one social worker" services, establish relief funds for donations, request assistance from the central government, set up three working groups, establish a multi-departmental investigative team, and announce the formation of an independent commission to thoroughly investigate the truth, hold those responsible accountable, and prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
Carrie Lam pointed out that the issues exposed by the fire must be addressed with the utmost seriousness. The SAR Government will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the fire and the rapid spread of the flames, review current policies, clarify responsibilities, and ensure that any institutional deficiencies are addressed. She announced the establishment of an independent commission led by a judge, with seasoned professionals as members, who may request assistance from government departments, including those with investigative powers, to facilitate efficient work, comprehensively examine the incident, and promptly make recommendations and submit reports. They will ensure a serious finding of the truth, strict accountability, prevent disasters from recurring, and meet the expectations of the public.
