After Kazuki Katayama published his comments, the Japanese yen strengthened slightly against the US dollar.

Japanese Finance Minister Koizumi Kogetsu made a speech on the issue of exchange rates, and the yen slightly rose against the dollar. The yen rose by 0.2% against the dollar to 157.20 at one point. Koizumi stated that if there is excessive volatility in the foreign exchange market, Japan will consider options such as exchange rate intervention, and mentioned that it is extremely difficult to find the right balance between inflation, bond yields, and the weakening yen.
