Spanish court orders Meta to pay 479 million euros in compensation for unfair competition and data violations.
A court in Spain has ruled that Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, must pay 479 million euros to Spanish digital media organizations for unfair competition practices and violation of EU data protection regulations. Meta has stated that they will appeal the ruling. The Madrid Commercial Court stated on Thursday that this compensation will be paid to 87 digital news publishers and news agencies, as Meta used personal data for behavioral advertising on Facebook and Instagram. The court pointed out that this American tech giant gained a "significant competitive advantage" in the online advertising market in Spain by illegally processing user data.
