A court in Spain has ruled that Facebook's parent company Meta Platforms must pay 479 million euros (approximately 552 million dollars) to Spanish digital media organizations for unfair competition practices and violations of EU data protection regulations. Meta has stated that it will appeal the decision. The Madrid Commercial Court stated on Thursday that this compensation will be paid to 87 digital news publishers and communication agencies because Meta used personal data on Facebook and Instagram for targeted advertising. The court pointed out that the American tech giant gained a "significant competitive advantage" in Spain's online advertising market by unlawfully processing user data.
