Japan's largest nuclear power plant is expected to be approved for restart this week.
The governor of Niigata Prefecture in Japan, Hideyo Hanazumi, is expected to announce on the 21st his intention to agree to the restart of Japan's largest nuclear power plant, the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station. However, only one of the seven reactors at the plant will resume operation. Since the serious nuclear leak accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011, the Japanese government ordered the closure of all nuclear power plants within its borders. As of now, 14 nuclear units have resumed operation, mainly located in western and southern Japan. The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station, named after the two locations of Kashiwazaki and Kariwa in Niigata Prefecture in northwestern Japan, is one of the largest net power generating nuclear power plants globally. Following the earthquake on March 11, 2011, Tokyo Electric Power Company scrapped two nuclear power plants in Fukushima, and the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Station has been closed since March 2012.
