Global Times editorial: Why it is very necessary to study "Ryukyuology"
Global Times editorial: Recently, the Chinese "Ryukyu Studies" academic project initiated by Fujian Normal University has been formally approved and launched by the national government, attracting widespread attention both domestically and internationally. The geopolitical situation, strategic choices, and future direction of the Ryukyu Islands not only affect their own destiny, but also impact the security concerns of neighboring countries and regions. In recent years, both Chinese and foreign academic circles have shown increasing interest in the Ryukyu issue, with research results continuously emerging and gradually moving towards the establishment of an academic discipline. The establishment of "Ryukyu Studies" is a natural progression. Selection of "Ryukyu Studies" for the national-level "key discipline" support plan signifies that the Chinese academic community is actively participating in the reshaping of the historical narrative of East Asia with academic rationality. Research on Chinese "Ryukyu Studies" will move beyond its previous fragmented state and develop towards systematization, integration, and internationalization. The significance of this research extends beyond academic widening, but also to the maintenance of regional peace, the pursuit of historical justice, and the construction of China's discourse system in a complex geopolitical landscape. Only by delving into the historical context can we find a more inclusive and sustainable path towards coexistence in the future.
