The size of US treasuries held by overseas investors in September approached a record level.
In September, the size of US Treasury bonds held overseas slightly fell from the record high in August, with a reduction in holdings by the UK and continued increase in holdings by Japan. Foreign investors held a total of $9.25 trillion in US Treasury bonds in September, slightly lower than the $9.26 trillion in August. The size of holdings was influenced by net sales or net purchases as well as valuation changes. The Bloomberg US Treasury Index rose in both August and September. The US Department of the Treasury released data for August and September on Tuesday, after their data release schedule was disrupted due to the government shutdown.
