The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change called for COP30 to achieve substantive results as soon as possible.
The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was held in Belem, Brazil on the 17th. The Executive Secretary of the Secretariat of the Convention, Simon Stiell, called on delegates to accelerate consensus on key issues to ensure substantive outcomes at the conference. Stiell praised the good intentions shown by all parties in the first week of COP30. He stated that within the first 7 days of the conference, countries committed to raising $1 trillion in investments for clean energy and grids, supporting a global plan to quadruple sustainable fuels, incentivizing new developments in green industries, and preparing for new climate adaptation investments, all demonstrating that the Paris Agreement is a widely shared consensus for humanity to address the global climate crisis. Stiell also pointed out that COP30 still faces many daunting tasks and requires close cooperation from all parties to effectively advance global climate governance. He urged all participants to demonstrate effective climate cooperation in a faster and fairer way, promoting substantive progress. "I see a genuine determination from all parties to build upon the significant progress made in previous climate conferences. This once again demonstrates that climate cooperation can indeed drive real progress, but it must be done faster and in a more equitable manner."
