Rio Tinto plans to reduce the alumina production capacity of its Yarwun refinery by 40% starting in October 2026.
On November 18, Rio Tinto Group announced that in order to extend the operation of the Yarwun alumina refinery in Gladstone until 2035, it plans to reduce the plant's capacity by 40% starting from October 2026. The adjustment will involve approximately 180 positions, with an expected decrease of about 1.2 million tons in annual alumina production. Rio Tinto Group emphasized that this move will not affect customer demand or other operations, as its bauxite mines and aluminum smelters will continue to operate at full capacity.
