Informed sources: UK plans to impose retaliatory measures against EU steel tariffs.
According to reports from the US media, when British Prime Minister Stamer was unable to reach an agreement to mitigate the impact of the proposed steel tariffs by the EU, the UK is now developing countermeasures. Sources revealed that the British domestic metal industry had previously warned that the European plans could trigger its biggest crisis in history, prompting the British government to consider retaliatory action. The EU announced plans last month to reduce existing tariff-free quotas for foreign steel by nearly half and double the tariffs on excess quotas to 50%. Sources stated that the British government is also studying how to accelerate the replacement of its own steel safeguard measures and tighten import quotas. These current measures are set to expire in June. The British government stated in a statement, "This government has shown its commitment to the steel industry by ensuring that exporters have priority access to the US market. We will continue to explore stronger trade measures to protect our steel producers from unfair practices, while reiterating our desire to address the issue of overcapacity in the industry. Following the recent EU announcement of measures, we will continue to engage with them."
