The Sudanese armed forces announced that they have regained control of the important central city of Bara in the country.
On November 17th local time, the Sudanese Armed Forces announced that they had regained control of the city of Bara in the central North Kordofan state of Sudan. Bara is located about 350 kilometers southwest of the Sudanese capital Khartoum and serves as a key hub connecting Khartoum to multiple transportation routes in the western Darfur region. After the outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan, rapid support forces had long held control of Bara. Since September of this year, the two conflicting parties have been engaged in continuous fighting in the region, leading to the control of Bara changing hands multiple times. The Sudanese Armed Forces also announced on the same day that they had taken control of another city, Umm Sumaima, in North Kordofan state. Since October of this year, the rapid support forces have intensified their offensives in the Darfur and Kordofan regions of Sudan, taking control of the capital of North Darfur state, El Fasher, and attempting to seize control of the capitals of North and South Kordofan states, Kadugli and El Obeid. Recently, the Sudanese Armed Forces have gathered troops in the Kordofan region to launch a counterattack against the rapid support forces. On April 15, 2023, armed conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the rapid support forces in the capital Khartoum, spreading to other regions afterwards. The over two-year-long armed conflict has resulted in nearly 30,000 deaths in Sudan. According to recent data released by the United Nations, out of the approximately 50 million population of Sudan, over 11.7 million people have been displaced, and over 30 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
