The phased tasks of the revitalization of the seed industry in China during the "14th Five-Year Plan" have been completed smoothly.

Yesterday, the reporter learned from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, China has launched an action plan to revitalize the seed industry, and currently, the phased tasks have been successfully completed. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the agricultural germplasm resources are more abundant. China has completed the largest and most extensive national survey of agricultural germplasm resources since the founding of New China, clarifying the resource base and establishing world-class national germplasm banks for crops, livestock and poultry, and marine fisheries, with the total amount of resources ranking first in the world. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the overall innovation in seed industry technology has entered the forefront of the world. A number of major new varieties have been cultivated, such as wheat with high resistance to Fusarium head blight, rice with resistance to rice planthoppers, corn suitable for dense planting and mechanical harvesting, and soybeans resistant to herbicides with high oil and yield. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the supply capacity of seed industry bases has significantly increased. The formation of the core seed breeding "national team" based on the four national-level breeding bases in Gansu for corn, Sichuan for rice, Heilongjiang for soybeans, and Hainan for southern crops. Currently, the supply guarantee rate of national seed industry bases has reached 80%, an increase of 10 percentage points from 2020. In the five years since the start of the seed industry revitalization action, the level of seed source security in China has steadily improved, with more than 95% of agricultural crops being self-selected varieties, and domestic seed sources for livestock, poultry, and aquatic products occupying over 80% and 85% of the market, respectively. Overall, the agricultural seed security situation is more secure and the risks are more manageable.
