U.S. merchant introduces cash rounding policy as one-cent coin production halts.
After the US Mint ceased production of 1-cent coins, McDonald's, Wendy's, and Kroger have introduced cash transactions for rounding up or exact change policies in some stores. Previously, the US Department of the Treasury stated that due to the continuous increase in production costs, as well as rapid changes in consumer habits and technology, manufacturing a 1-cent coin is economically "unfeasible" and no longer necessary. The current cost of producing a 1-cent coin is 3.69 cents, far higher than the 1.42 cents a decade ago.
