BBC apologizes for editing a clip of Trump's speech, claiming it was a "judgment error."
The British Broadcasting Corporation apologized for its editing of Donald Trump's speech on January 6, 2021 - which took place shortly before the mob attacked the US Capitol building. The BBC stated that the editing was a "mistake in judgment" and that the program "will no longer be broadcast in this form on any BBC platform." A BBC spokesperson said, "We deeply regret the way the video clip was edited." However, he also added, "We strongly disagree that this constitutes a legal basis for a defamation claim." Trump had previously accused the BBC's "Panorama" program of "deceiving the public" because edited clips made it seem like he was explicitly calling on the crowd to attack the Capitol building in Washington, DC. In an interview with Fox News this week, he said, "I feel an obligation to act, I can't let them get away with it." and threatened to file a $1 billion lawsuit. However, Trump's legal team stated today that he has not formally filed a lawsuit against the BBC.
