Megan Greene, a policy maker at the Bank of England, has warned that the increasing political pressure on the independence of the Federal Reserve in the United States could spread to the United Kingdom. Previously, British populist leader Nigel Farage hinted that if elected Prime Minister, he would replace the Governor of the Bank of England. Greene said at a discussion on Thursday that the issue of central bank independence in the UK "will indeed be raised." She also said the UK should not "ignore" the repeated attempts by US President Donald Trump to pressure Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. "British politicians have recently been speaking out in the media, questioning why the Bank of England enjoys independent status," Greene said at an event at Chatham House in London. "Legal independence is one thing, but there is also a cultural aspect. Even if the law remains unchanged, the culture could change."
