The White House said the highly anticipated October employment and CPI data may never see the light of day.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said on Wednesday that the prolonged government shutdown may lead to the non-release of the October employment report and Consumer Price Index report. During the government shutdown in the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other major statistical agencies have suspended the compilation and release of economic data, which has deprived decision-makers of critical indicators of the health of the U.S. economy. Economists suggest that some statistical data can be collected and released afterwards, but some data may also be permanently skipped. Economists have previously pointed out that due to limitations in the collection of relevant basic data, the CPI and unemployment rate for October are most likely unable to be released. "Democrats may have permanently damaged the federal statistical system, so the October CPI and employment report may never be released," Levitt said at the press conference that day. The White House did not immediately respond to further requests for comment on the source of the news.
