On November 11, the Intermediate People's Court of Wuzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, publicly sentenced Shi Yongchao, former member of the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Baise City and deputy director, for bribery. He was sentenced to ten years and six months in prison for the crime of bribery, and fined 1.5 million RMB. The illegal gains from bribery obtained by Shi Yongchao were confiscated and turned over to the state treasury. According to the trial, from 2012 to 2022, the defendant Shi Yongchao used his positions as Deputy Secretary of the Jingxi County Committee of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, county magistrate of Debao County, and Secretary of the County Committee of Debao County to provide assistance to related persons in project contracting and payment of project funds, through his own behavior or through other state personnel, and illegally accepted more than 19.14 million RMB in money and property, some of which were not actually obtained. The Intermediate People's Court of Wuzhou City believes that Shi Yongchao's actions constitute the crime of bribery, with an especially large amount of bribery, and should be punished according to law. Considering that some of the bribes received by Shi Yongchao were unsuccessful, he voluntarily surrendered, confessed and repented, and partially returned the embezzled funds, which constitutes statutory and discretionary circumstances for a lighter punishment. The court therefore made the above judgment in accordance with the law. After the sentence was announced, the defendant Shi Yongchao expressed his acceptance of the judgment in court and stated that he will not appeal.
