The Taiwan Affairs Office responds to calls from within the island to uphold the 1992 Consensus.
On the morning of November 12th, the Taiwan Affairs Office held a routine press conference. A reporter asked, "The seminar 'Negotiation and Consultation on Cross-Strait Relations: Finding Solutions from the Past' was recently held in Taipei, with participants calling for enhancing communication and dialogue between the two sides and resuming negotiations. This has attracted attention from the public. What is your comment on this?" Spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office, Chen Binhua, said, "The '1992 Consensus' is the political foundation for the development of cross-strait relations and the stabilizing anchor for peace in the Taiwan Strait. It is on the basis of the '1992 Consensus' that the two sides have engaged in negotiations, signed a series of agreements, and reached many consensuses, effectively enhancing the economic and livelihood well-being of both sides and safeguarding peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The historical wheel of national unity and rejuvenation is rolling forward. The sooner the Taiwan issue is resolved and the reunification of the motherland is achieved, the more beneficial it is for Taiwan's development and for the Taiwanese people to live better lives. Compatriots on both sides of the strait are all Chinese people and are one family with blood ties. They have the ability and wisdom to negotiate family matters and firmly grasp the destiny of the Chinese nation in their own hands."
