The sanctions imposed by the United States on the Lukoil company in Russia have affected its operations in Europe, raising concerns about the winter energy supply in several European countries. The Chairman of Bulgaria's National Reserves and War Stocks Agency, Assen Assenov, revealed that Bulgaria only has enough gasoline available to last for about a month. In order to pressure Russia and Ukraine to immediately cease fire, the US Treasury announced sanctions on the Russian state-owned company, Rosneft, and the private company, Lukoil, with the sanctions set to take effect on November 21. The Burgas refinery is Bulgaria's largest refinery and one of Lukoil's important overseas assets. With winter approaching, some Bulgarians are worried that the US sanctions may affect their country's energy supply.
