Geopolitical instability fuels resurgence of piracy, posing security risks to shipping corridors.
According to reports, instability in Yemen and the Horn of Africa is fueling a resurgence of piracy activities in the waters near Somalia, attracting attention in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes. According to data from the UK Maritime Trade Operations, there have been at least three recorded incidents near countries in the Horn of Africa this month alone, echoing the destruction caused by Somali pirates along the East African coast over the past decade. Daniel Mueller, senior analyst and Middle East and Indian Ocean lead at the British maritime security company Ambrey, said that although piracy behavior is opportunistic in nature, the threat to shipping could continue to persist. Somali lawmakers approved legislation on Monday to combat piracy. However, the country lacks the resources or capability to curb crime and still relies on foreign military forces to protect key government officials and buildings.
