World Food Programme: 3 million people in eastern Congo are facing famine
The United Nations World Food Programme issued a stern warning on November 7 local time about the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, stating that there is a significant funding gap for emergency food assistance in the region, which could lead to the aid program being forced to stop in February or March 2026. The WFP country director in the DRC, Joan Jones, revealed that currently 3 million people in the eastern provinces of Congo are facing famine, and some have already died from starvation. She emphasized the urgent need for $350 million in funding to sustain humanitarian operations for the next six months, and called for the establishment of a humanitarian air corridor.
