Canada will cancel energy emission limits under specific conditions.
Canada on Tuesday suggested that it will adjust its climate change policies, which may result in abandoning the emission cap set for the domestic oil and gas industry. The Canadian government stated in its annual budget plan that it believes the carbon emission cap for oil and gas producers "will no longer be necessary" as long as certain conditions are met. These conditions include reaching an agreement on a new industrial carbon pricing plan with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Additionally, these conditions also include stricter limits on methane emissions, as well as large-scale deployment of carbon capture and storage capabilities in the energy industry. Canadian Finance Minister Sean Li said, "When these conditions are met, we will no longer need this cap." Officials stated that the emission cap rules to be announced by the end of 2023 have not yet been implemented, and the implementation date is yet to be determined. Canada is one of the first major oil-producing countries in the world to implement emission limits on its domestic energy industry.
