Hassan elected President of Tanzania, post-election situation draws attention.
The National Electoral Commission of Tanzania announced the presidential election results on November 1, showing that the candidate of the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi, the incumbent president Samia Suluhu Hassan, received 97.66% of the votes, becoming the first democratically elected female president in the country's history. Tanzania held its general election on October 29. Since the voting, protests have erupted in some areas, with demonstrators gathering in the streets to demand progress in electoral reforms; the government announced a curfew in Dar es Salaam starting from 18:00 on October 29. As of November 1, the curfew measures had not been lifted. Meanwhile, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights issued a statement expressing serious concern about the deterioration of human rights situation in Tanzania after the general election, calling on the government to prioritize easing the current situation, avoid the use of disproportionate force against protesters, and immediately launch an independent investigation. The Commission stated that it will continue to closely monitor the human rights situation in Tanzania.
