On March 14th, Studio Ghibli's new work "How Do You Live?" directed by Hayao Miyazaki was announced to be released in mainland China on April 3rd. The film just won the Best Animated Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards and has been confirmed for release in mainland China. This is another Oscar-winning animation work by Hayao Miyazaki following "Spirited Away," and it is also the fastest film by Miyazaki to be released in mainland China. On the same day as the release in mainland China, the immersive art exhibition for Studio Ghibli's works, the first stop in the world, was announced to be held in Shanghai from April to October this year.
"How Do You Live?" is Hayao Miyazaki's new work after a 10-year hiatus, telling the story of a boy who lost his mother meeting a talking heron and embarking on an incredible adventure. The film has achieved remarkable box office results and good reputation overseas when it was released, becoming the highest-grossing original Japanese animated film in North America and the best-selling film by Studio Ghibli in North America. It has also won numerous awards such as Best Animated Feature at the 81st Golden Globe Awards, "Top Ten Films of the Year" by the National Board of Review in 2023, and "Best Animated Feature" at the 49th Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.
With the strategic cooperation reached between ALI PICTURES and Studio Ghibli in January of this year, the expectations from mainland Chinese audiences for the film have become stronger. The super-fast release of the film is undoubtedly a huge surprise for the fans and viewers.
In addition to animated films, the strategic cooperation between the two sides also includes cooperation plans in multiple fields such as immersive exhibitions. Authorized by Studio Ghibli and jointly organized by ALI PICTURES' platform Damai's exhibition production label "Arts & Exhibitions," the immersive art exhibition of Studio Ghibli's works will be officially launched in April this year. This is Studio Ghibli's first attempt at immersive exhibitions.
Damai, a platform under ALI PICTURES, has been deeply involved in live entertainment for many years, accumulating rich platform resources and operational experience. Its exhibition production label "Arts & Exhibitions" is committed to providing professional services in the planning and investment of high-end art exhibitions, presenting high-quality art works to art lovers and consumers, and making art closer to more people. The landing of Studio Ghibli's immersive art exhibition is not only another in-depth layout of "Arts & Exhibitions" in high-quality art exhibition production, but also reflects the unique advantage of ALI PICTURES in covering both film and performance fields and conducting diversified content development through the linkage of film and performance.
It is reported that the exhibition will be centered around Studio Ghibli's classic animated works, combining technology and art to present the world of Hayao Miyazaki's animations in an immersive and multi-sensory manner. In addition to the real-life reconstructions of classic Studio Ghibli films such as "Spirited Away," "My Neighbor Totoro," "Howl's Moving Castle," and "Porco Rosso," unreleased stills from the film "How Do You Live?" will also be shown for the first time globally.
Industry insiders believe that the release of "How Do You Live?" in mainland China and the development and landing of Studio Ghibli's immersive art exhibition will further promote the innovation and integration of artistic presentation forms in animated works, bringing audiences a new experience. It will also serve as a friendly bridge to promote cultural exchanges and mutual learning between China and Japan.
