Starting from March 29th, the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited will include currency futures and options in the trading of derivative products during holidays.
On February 23, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange announced today that all currency futures and options under its umbrella will be included in the list of eligible products for holiday trading of derivative products starting from March 29, 2024.
On February 23, HKEX announced that all its currency futures and options will be included in the list of eligible products for holiday trading of derivatives from March 29, 2024. Currency products to be included in holiday trading of derivatives include: futures and options trading of the US Dollar, Euro, Australian Dollar, Japanese Yen, and Indian Rupee against the Renminbi.
Ms. Susanna Wong, Head of Emerging Business, Fixed Income and Currency at HKEX, expressed her delight in announcing the expansion of holiday trading of derivatives, including popular currency futures and options products in the market, allowing investors to manage foreign exchange risks during public holidays in Hong Kong.
Ms. Wong added that the introduction of holiday trading of derivatives in 2022 significantly enhanced the attractiveness and vitality of the derivatives market ecosystem. HKEX will continue to enrich the product range and enhance market infrastructure, further solidifying Hong Kong's position as a global leader in offshore Renminbi center and risk management center.
HKEX launched holiday trading of derivatives in May 2022, allowing international investors to continue buying and selling non-Hong Kong-dollar products and conducting related risk management on HKEX during public holidays in Hong Kong. All 39 MSCI index futures and options contracts currently available on HKEX can be traded during holidays.
Maintaining its leading position in the global offshore Renminbi business center, HKEX's Renminbi futures saw a daily trading volume of nearly 40,000 contracts in 2023, more than double the figure in 2022. The robust trading of Renminbi futures continued into 2024, reaching a record high daily trading volume of 77,417 contracts in January.
