On November 28th, the newly launched Microhaem Scientifics (MHS) diagnostic reagent manufacturing factory in Uganda officially began operating.
On November 28th, the Microhaem Scientifics (MHS) diagnostic reagent manufacturing factory in Uganda was officially launched. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, Chinese Ambassador to Uganda Zhang Lizhong, President of Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech Peng Zhongxiong, Vice President Xu Wenjie, and others attended the conference. In response to the "Belt and Road" Initiative, Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech provided MHS with a complete set of technical support and assistance for the construction of the factory, helping them establish a quality management system to prepare for future World Health Organization reviews. The establishment of this factory will reduce Africa's dependence on imported diagnostic reagents and provide high-quality and more affordable products to local residents, benefiting more people in Africa and jointly improving public health services in Africa. During the launch ceremony, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni cut the ribbon for the MHS factory and praised its establishment. He also made a commitment that the Ugandan government will purchase the test kits produced by the MHS factory through the Ministry of Health. "MHS is already in a leading position in the field of diagnostic reagent manufacturing in our country." said Jane Ruth Aceng, Minister of Health of Uganda. She expressed that the support of international partners such as Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech has promoted the development of the local manufacturing industry. With the full support of Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech, the MHS factory has created an automated production system, making it not only the first automated manufacturing plant in Uganda but also in Sub-Saharan Africa. The MHS factory was built according to ISO13485, cGMP, and World Health Organization standards, and has obtained certification and production permits from the Ugandan National Drug Authority (NDA). In the initial phase of operation, the MHS factory will first produce HIV test kits and malaria diagnostic reagents with technical assistance from Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech. Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech will continue to provide technical support to gradually expand the production of other diagnostic reagent products in the MHS factory, and support the future certification of MHS products by the World Health Organization. This will provide strong support for public health infectious disease prevention and control projects in Uganda and East Africa. At the same time, when operating at full capacity, the MHS factory will create over 1,500 direct jobs and over 5,000 indirect jobs, effectively promoting local employment stability and economic development. Jane Ruth Aceng, Minister of Health of Uganda, pointed out that Uganda has been facing the challenge of unsustainable imports of necessary diagnostic products and drugs for many years, including malaria, tuberculosis, sleeping sickness, Ebola, and other diseases. Local production is the only solution. Therefore, she is very pleased with the completion and opening of the MHS factory, which is a reflection of the enhancement of local manufacturing capabilities. It is reported that the annual demand for medical diagnostic products in Uganda's health sector alone amounts to $200 million, creating an $83 million gap even with the support of development partners and the government. The purchase of HIV and malaria test kits alone costs over $20 million. After the MHS factory is put into use, it will save Uganda over $100 million in import costs for test kits annually. Jane Ruth Aceng stated that as an important member of the East African Community (8 countries), MHS products can impact over 300 million people in Uganda, and through the African Continental Free Trade Area, it can cover over 1 billion people on the African continent. For more than 10 years, Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech's products and services have been widely applied and recognized in Africa, including Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and more than 40 other countries since 2012. Among them, Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech's infectious disease test reagents have been widely used and highly praised in African countries. The professional version and self-test version of the HIV testing product have obtained WHO PQ certification and have served various African countries through public procurement markets. Since 2002, Guangzhou Wondfo Biotech has been going global, continuously supporting global health construction with technology, promoting Chinese innovation and brand to the world, contributing Chinese power to the construction of a global health community, and striving to make biotechnology benefit all people.
