FTSE Russell: Technology weighting in the China A50 Index continues to rise.
Between 2016 and 2026, the weight of the technology sector rose from approximately 1.3% to 17.2%, an increase of 10.2 percentage points compared with December 2025 and 5.1 times the 2024 level.
According to an article by FTSE Russell, the FTSE China A50 Index, constructed by FTSE Russell, has continued to reflect the overall performance of the China A-share market and has been highly correlated with the broader market since its launch in 2003, for more than two decades. Since 2008, the industry structure of the FTSE China A50 Index has undergone significant changes. At the end of 2016, the financial sector accounted for more than 66% of the index weight; after the September 2026 index review, although the financial sector remains the largest sector, its weight has fallen to 27.6%, and both its dominance and concentration have declined compared with the past. Between 2016 and 2026, the weight of the technology sector rose from about 1.3% to 17.2%, an increase of 10.2 percentage points from December 2025 and 5.1 times the 2024 level.

From December 31, 2025 to the September 2026 index review, the sectors with the largest relative declines in weight were consumer staples (-35%), consumer discretionary (-21%), health care (-16%) and financials (-16%). The Q3 2026 index review involved constituent changes in the technology, consumer staples and basic materials sectors, further driving changes in the index's industry structure.
The rise in the technology sector's weight in the index reflects the evolution of the structure of China's large-cap market. As the relative market capitalization of technology companies has grown, relevant companies have been included in the index and received higher weights, while the weights of some traditional sectors have declined.
Technology sector weight has risen significantly since 2024
The technology sector's weight in the index has fluctuated over time, remaining at a low level in earlier years and falling to 0% in 2023. It rebounded to 3% in 2024, more than doubled in 2025, and more than doubled again by September 2026. The recent increase was partly driven by index review changes, with Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Inc. China and Shengyi Technology, both in the technology sector, added to the index in September 2026.
Investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure and semiconductor production is supporting demand for optical communications, chip manufacturing equipment and electronic materials, and the relevant companies are increasingly represented in the FTSE China A50 Index.
For investors using A50-linked products, this means that within a large-cap benchmark spanning multiple industries, the technology sector's influence on index performance has increased. Compared with the index's past structure, which was weighted toward financials, this reflects a marked change in the index's industry composition.
