According to the National Energy Administration, in the third quarter of 2026, China's coal-fired power generation and its share declined year on year, and new progress was made in the low-carbon energy transition. As recent measures to increase coal production and ensure supply were implemented at a faster pace, coal supply recovered steadily. At the same time, coal consumption remained relatively stable, the supply-demand gap narrowed further, and coal inventories for power generation stayed within a safe and reasonable range, providing a solid foundation for ensuring supply during the winter peak season.
Coal-fired power generation and its share declined year on year. In July, August, and September, national coal-fired power generation fell by 4.0%, 4.6%, and 1.9% year on year, respectively, with coal consumption for power generation declining accordingly. After the share of domestic coal-fired power generation fell below 50% for the first time in the first half of this year, it dropped further to 49.1% by the end of September. The proportion of annual incremental coal-fired power generation in total incremental electricity consumption continued to decline, falling to 4.4% by the end of September.
Coal inventories are within a safe and reasonable range. As of October 25, coal stockpiles at ports around the Bohai Rim stood at 26.92 million tons, up 2.15 million tons year on year, of which Qinhuangdao Port held 5.95 million tons, up 420,000 tons year on year. Coal inventories at nationally coordinated power plants remained at a relatively high level, standing at 210 million tons on October 25, sufficient for an average of 35 days, comparable to the average level of the past three years.
