The decrease in foreign currency assets was mainly due to the mark-to-market revaluation of investments. The decrease in Hong Kong dollar assets was mainly due to the mark-to-market revaluation of Hong Kong equities.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority's Currency Board accounts show that the monetary base at the end of September 2026 was HK$2.0902 trillion, an increase of HK$10 billion, or 0.5%, from the end of August 2026. The growth in the monetary base was mainly due to an increase in the total amount of Certificates of Indebtedness and the amortization of discounts on outstanding Exchange Fund bills and notes.

The increase in backing assets was mainly due to interest income from investments and the issuance of Certificates of Indebtedness, but the increase was partly offset by the mark-to-market revaluation of investments. The backing ratio decreased from 112.00% at the end of August 2026 to 111.66% at the end of September 2026.
