Energy earnings week arrives: Refining giant Marathon Oil Corporation (MPC.US) doubling its profit is just the opening act, with political criticism poised to erupt
Energy giants' earnings week arrives: ExxonMobil and others' EPS expected to double, BTIG warns refining index may pull back after 160% gain.
Note that the coming week is crucial for energy investors. Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM.US), Chevron Corporation (CVX.US), Marathon Oil Corporation (MPC.US), and ConocoPhillips (COP.US) will report earnings in succession.
Industry observer Brian Sullivan put it bluntly: these numbers will be stunningso large they can only be described as "Texas-sized."
The expected figures for Exxon Mobil Corporation, Chevron Corporation, and ConocoPhillips are as above, with all three companies' earnings per share (EPS) projected to more than double year-over-year. Refining-focused companies present a different picture.
Marathon Oil Corporation's EPS is expected to reach as high as $25.37. Three months ago, the company's EPS came in at $17.73, while market expectations were "only" $14.27. Another comparison: just a year ago, this Ohio-based company earned only $4.51 per share. Soaring oil prices and, more critically, a sharp widening of refined product "crack spreads" are expected to boost its sales by $13 billion in a year.
For the four companies above, guidance may matter more than the earnings reports themselves. What these companies say about the outlook and capital spending is the key, and any adjustment to spending plans will be closely watched by investors.
These numbers will also be closely watched by politicians. As oil prices rise, politicians will likely seize on these enormous figures to attack the industry as a whole. An industry source said the sector has become "inured" to political attacks but hopes outsiders will pay more attention to the industry's boom-and-bust cyclical naturethe profits companies are earning now will be used to weather future downturns, in preparation for the decline in oil prices that "will eventually" arrive at some point.
Whatever one's stance on the oil majors, the coming week will be dramatic for energy investors across multiple dimensionsall in full view.
BTIG chart analyst Jonathan Krinsky cautioned that investors should remain cautious on the energy sector. As for refiners, he noted that the S&P Refining Index has risen nearly 160% in 2026, the best performance in at least three decades and far ahead of the pack.
Krinsky wrote earlier this week: "At a minimum, expect consolidation in the sector, and more likely a significant mean-reversion pullback."
Krinsky is bearish on the technical charts for Valero Energy Corporation and Marathon Oil Corporation. For the latter, he said the stock "has yet to truly break below its uptrend, but a breakdown feels imminent."
Next week brings one of the world's most important energy conferences: the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC). The event brings together Yunji, Inc. Sponsored ADR Class A global energy heavyweights, all at a time when markets are worried about a possible new round of U.S. strikes on Iran or its energy infrastructure, with the situation still tense.
Oil continues to flow through the Strait of Hormuz in part because the U.S. Navy is ensuring vessels can pass. But risks remain: the Iran conflict could reignite, and the U.S. may launch new strikes on Iranian targets. If so, oil prices would likely jump.
