Revitalization measures to boost customer traffic prove effective; Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (CMG.US) Q3 revenue beats expectations.
Chipotle Mexican Grill shares rise as the burrito chain steps up efforts to restore customer traffic.
As of press time, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (CMG.US) shares rose 7% in Thursday premarket trading, after the prior day's management comments showed that CEO Scott Boatwright's efforts to win customers back with a new menu and marketing push are paying off. The Mexican fast-casual chain said on its post-earnings call on Wednesday that it expects to exit the current quarter with same-store sales growth of about 3% to 4%, above the 2.1% increase in the three months ended September.
Bringing customers back: menu and marketing in tandem
Earlier this week, the company announced that smoked brisket would return for a limited time starting November 5, timed to the holiday season and football season. That is the company's latest step to lift traffic. In the third quarter, new items such as jalapeno lime chips and the return of pollo asado were already driving sales.
More notable is the shift in the customer mix. Boatwright said on the call that in the third quarter, low-income customers outperformed high-income customers for the first time, with September the best monthprecisely when the company's promotional intensity was at its lowest for the year. "Broader consumer and industry headwinds may persist, but the initiatives under our 'growth recipe' strategy are building, giving us more tools to win in any environment," he said.
However, the company did not raise its full-year outlook: 2026 same-store sales will still grow in the "low single-digit range," consistent with the forecast given in July. In other words, the 3%4% "exit rate" for the fourth quarter is a target, not full-year guidance.
Price increase of about 3% to offset beef and diesel
Costs are the other main thread in this earnings report. The company said it will raise menu prices by about 3% in the fourth quarter to offset more expensive beef and higher freight costs from surging diesel prices.
The third-quarter cost structure confirms where the pressure lies: food, beverage and packaging costs were 29.5% of revenue, down from 30.0% a year earlierthe improvement came from menu price increases, tariff relief and a favorable limited-time product mix, but was partly offset by beef and freight inflation and increased protein usage. Labor costs rose to 25.7% from 25.2%, due to lower volumes, higher employee compensation (including wage inflation and performance bonuses), additional store labor to support promotional activities, and higher insurance costs. Administrative expenses rose to $185.2 million from $146.7 million, driven mainly by stock-based compensation, performance bonuses and external services related to corporate projects. The effective tax rate rose to 25.6% from 23.1%.
Profit and earnings: revenue beats, EPS misses
Third-quarter total revenue rose 9.6% to $3.293 billion, driven mainly by new store openings, with a smaller contribution from same-store sales; same-store sales grew 2.1% (average ticket +1.3%, transactions +0.8%). Digital sales accounted for 38.8% of food and beverage revenue, up from 36.7% a year earlier. The company opened 84 company-operated stores in the quarter, 53 of which feature a "Chipotlane" drive-thru lane.
But profitability came under clear pressure: operating margin fell to 13.7% from 15.9% a year earlier, and restaurant-level operating margin fell to 23.3% from 24.5%; diluted earnings per share and adjusted earnings per share were both $0.27, down 6.9% year over year. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected adjusted EPS of $0.29, revenue of $3.286 billion and same-store sales growth of 1.5%revenue and same-store sales slightly beat, while EPS missed.
The stock's reaction was a typical "buy the profit, then look at the margin" pattern: it rose as much as 7.6% after the bell on Wednesday and 7% in Thursday premarket trading. Even so, the stock is still down more than 20% year to date, having been weighed down by budget-sensitive consumers, discount offensives from casual-dining restaurants, and the aftermath of this summer's cyclospora incident.
