Hong Kong International Airport's air traffic volume continued to grow steadily in September.
Hong Kong International Airport's air traffic continued to grow steadily in September, with passenger traffic recording double-digit growth, rising 10.2% year-on-year to 4.86 million passenger trips; aircraft movements increased 7.0% to 32,175; and cargo throughput grew 6.3% to 433,000 tonnes. September's overall passenger traffic growth continued to be driven by double-digit growth in transfer/transit passengers, while visitor arrivals to Hong Kong also recorded 5.0% year-on-year growth. Most markets recorded growth during the month, with the Chinese mainland market performing most notably, while the decline in the Middle East market continued to narrow. On the cargo front, transshipment and import cargo volumes grew 26.9% and 9.2% respectively, driving the increase in September cargo throughput. By region, cargo growth was mainly driven by the Southeast Asian and Chinese mainland markets, offsetting the decline in the European market. The pullback in the European market was mainly due to the EU's removal in July of the de minimis duty exemption arrangement for low-value imported goods. Summarizing the first three quarters of this year, Hong Kong International Airport handled a total of 49.1 million passenger trips and 302,075 aircraft movements, up 10.1% and 3.9% year-on-year respectively. Cargo throughput rose 3.1% year-on-year to 3.78 million tonnes. Over the past 12 months, airport passenger traffic rose 11.5% year-on-year to 65.4 million passenger trips, aircraft movements grew 4.9% to 405,945, and cargo throughput increased 3.3% year-on-year to 5.18 million tonnes.
