Nscale IPO Plans May Face Changes: Major Client Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) Exits UK Data Center Agreement
According to reports, Microsoft has withdrawn from its UK data center partnership project with Nscale.
Reports indicate that Microsoft Corporation (MSFT.US) has withdrawn from a previously planned UK data center agreement with artificial intelligence infrastructure provider Nscale, potentially complicating the British company's initial public offering (IPO) plans. The agreement involved Nscale's proposed data center in Loughton, Essex, where Microsoft Corporation was originally expected to be the anchor tenant.
The specific reasons for Microsoft Corporation's withdrawal are unclear, although the project had previously encountered delays and difficulties in securing power supply. Reports indicate that Nscale has been told the facility may not receive grid access until the 2030s, casting doubt on its development timeline.
Nscale's flagship data center in Norway is also approximately six months behind schedule, with only 6.4 megawatts of its planned 30-megawatt capacity in operation.
These developments come as Nscale prepares for an IPO that could take place as early as October, with fundraising of up to $3 billion. According to its IPO filing, Microsoft Corporation and Anthropic together account for approximately 85% of Nscale's contracts, highlighting its reliance on large technology customers. Losing Microsoft Corporation as an anchor tenant could complicate Nscale's expansion plans and invite stricter investor scrutiny ahead of its listing.
Nscale said the company remains committed to developing the Loughton project and is exploring alternative power sources and additional opportunities to expand in the UK. The company maintains that its relationship with Microsoft Corporation remains solid and that the power supply issues will not affect other contracts.
This development comes as investor concerns grow over financing needs and execution risks for artificial intelligence infrastructure projects. Shares of rival artificial intelligence infrastructure provider CoreWeave (CRWV.US) fell approximately 25% last week amid concerns about its borrowing plans and data center financing.
Separately, Australian data center developer Firmus recently abandoned its planned IPO after failing to attract sufficient investor demand at its proposed valuation. These setbacks highlight the growing pressure on artificial intelligence infrastructure companies to demonstrate that their ambitious expansion plans are financially sustainable.
