Driven by its equities trading business, Goldman Sachs' third-quarter results beat market expectations.
Before the U.S. market opened on Tuesday, Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (GS.US) released its third-quarter 2026 financial report. The report showed that Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.'s Q3 net revenue rose 23.1% year-over-year to $18.68 billion, $1.79 billion above the market consensus estimate; net profit was $5.294 billion, up 29% year-over-year; GAAP diluted earnings per share were $17.01, $3.92 above the market consensus estimate. The annualized return on common shareholders' equity (ROE) was 18.7%, a sharp increase from 14.2% in the same period last year. Performance was mainly driven by the equities trading business. Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.'s Q3 Global Banking & Markets net revenue was $13.458 billion, up 32% year-over-year. Among this, equities net revenue was $6.441 billion, up 72% year-over-year. Fixed income, currencies and commodities (FICC) became the main factor dragging down overall performance. The business posted quarterly net revenue of $3.473 billion, down slightly by about 1% year-over-year. It not only failed to sustain its growth momentum, but also fell clearly short of market expectations, becoming the main drag on this quarter's results. The investment banking business delivered a standout performance this quarter, with revenue in all major sub-segments exceeding market expectations. Investment banking fees were $3.224 billion, up 21% year-over-year. Among this, advisory revenue was $1.65 billion, up 18% year-over-year, reflecting a recovery in M&A activity; equity underwriting revenue was $666 million, slightly above the expected $646 million; debt underwriting revenue was $904 million, above the expected $824 million. Asset & Wealth Management net revenue was $5.051 billion, up 14% year-over-year. As of September 30, assets under management rose to $4.097 trillion, up 19% from a year earlier. Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. also completed two important acquisitions this quarter to expand its asset management business, which exceeds $4 trillion in scale. The bank acquired exchange-traded fund (ETF) provider NEOS Investments for $2.25 billion and commercial real estate investment firm LCN Capital Partners for up to $410 million. Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. Chief Executive Officer David Solomon said: "In the face of a complex operating environment, clients continued to turn to Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. for world-class advisory, execution and financing support, making this quarter's net revenue the second-highest in history and year-to-date net revenue a record high." It is worth noting that Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.'s incentive fees this quarter increased nearly eightfold year-over-year to $587 million. According to reports, this portion of revenue is closely related to Goldman Sachs Group, Inc.'s business involving wealth management clients participating in investment arrangements for SpaceX's early financing, with the fees obtained far exceeding the compensation it received for providing advisory services for SpaceX's largest-ever IPO. As of press time, Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. rose more than 3% in Tuesday's U.S. premarket trading.
