Founder: Channel migration drives category revival, high-end yellow rice wine ushers in value revaluation
The yellow rice wine industry is at an inflection point of category revival driven by the reallocation of channel factors.
Founder released a research report stating that the yellow rice wine industry is at an inflection point of category revival driven by the reallocation of channel elements. Current cooperation remains asymmetric, with a stark disparity in scale between the two sides, making it difficult for yellow rice wine to substantially fill the profit gap of major baijiu distributors in the short term; although channel restructuring is an inevitable trend, recruitment is only the starting point, and caution is needed against overestimating short-term enthusiasm. The bank believes that yellow rice wine currently has a scale of only about 20 billion yuan, with considerable room for penetration improvement, and the DRIVE comes from economic stage transitions, changes in momentum structure, shifts in drinking preferences and scenarios, and generational turnover.
Founder's main points are as follows:
The yellow rice wine industry is at an inflection point of category revival driven by the reallocation of channel elements.
Profit margins at the baijiu channel end have been systematically narrowing for four consecutive years, forcing major baijiu distributors with capital, personal networks, and tasting operation capabilities to seek new category outlets; yellow rice wine, with its high channel gross margins brought by low awareness and low price transparency, as well as an undefined high-end price band, has become a realistic vehicle for undertaking this round of channel resource migration.
This round of yellow rice wine channel inflection is driven by the resonance of three forces.
First, baijiu channel profits are systematically narrowing, with output declining for nine consecutive years and price inversion intensifying, and channel pressure has continued to transmit since 2022; second, the core assets accumulated by major baijiu distributors over many yearscash flow and credit, high-net-worth personal networks and group-buying resources, tasting operations and price control teamscannot be left idle, and after baijiu lost the value-added gains from stockpiling, new allocation outlets are urgently needed; third, structural contradictions in manufacturer-distributor relations have emerged, with those who have not obtained top-tier positions finding it difficult to enter, while those who have obtained positions are continuously squeezed by distilleries through payment requirements, direct-to-consumer transformation, and digital price control. Against this backdrop, leading yellow rice wine companies opening up recruitment provides major baijiu distributors with new incremental volume, identity assets, and a strategic window to participate in defining a new category, constituting the core catalyst for the channel-end inflection.
Mutual benefit constitutes the realistic foundation for current manufacturer-distributor cooperation.
On the channel side, yellow rice wine has limited market awareness and low price transparency, with channel gross margins for high-end products reaching 20%30% or more, and the market scale is small with low payment thresholds, keeping trial-and-error costs limited for major baijiu distributors; on the distillery side, the core shortcoming of yellow rice wine lies not in quality but in insufficient high-end mindshare reach, and major distributors can provide "a seat at the table," introducing products to high-net-worth customer groups and achieving circle-level reach through tasting events and group-buying networks, driving yellow rice wine's value leap from a regional table wine to a high-end social wine. At the same time, current cooperation remains asymmetric, with a stark disparity in scale between the two sides, making it difficult for yellow rice wine to substantially fill the profit gap of major baijiu distributors in the short term; although channel restructuring is an inevitable trend, recruitment is only the starting point, and caution is needed against overestimating short-term enthusiasm.
The premiumization of yellow rice wine is achieving a triple breakthrough.
In terms of price band, from being long fixed below 30 yuan as a table wine and cooking wine, to the emergence of Zhejiang Guyuelongshan Shaoxing Wine's "Guoniang 1959" (1,959 yuan/bottle, 40-year aged) and Kuaijishan Shaoxing Rice Wine's "Master Lanting" and other flagship products above 1,000 yuan, the price ceiling has been substantially opened; in terms of manufacturer-distributor relations, because no high-end brand of the same tier has yet been formed, cooperation is closer to "joint entrepreneurship," evolving into diverse forms such as high-end single-product agency, joint-venture regional subsidiaries, customized development, co-branding, and self-built brands; in terms of the value system, although a unified standard has not yet been formed, the bank believes that the four elements of origin, vintage, handmade winter brewing, and no added caramel color are expected to constitute a reference framework for the value expression of high-end yellow rice wine.
The bank believes that yellow rice wine currently has a scale of only about 20 billion yuan, with considerable room for penetration improvement, and the DRIVE comes from economic stage transitions, changes in momentum structure, shifts in drinking preferences and scenarios, and generational turnover.
At the valuation level, PE/PS temporarily fail during the industry inflection period, and currently structural indicators > revenue indicators > profit indicators. Compared horizontally with baijiu companies of equivalent scale, yellow rice wine companies have room for optimization in gross margin, expense ratio, and the volume-based tax system. If Zhejiang Guyuelongshan Shaoxing Wine's gross margin reaches the comparable average and Kuaijishan Shaoxing Rice Wine's selling expense ratio falls to the comparable average, both have room for net profit margin improvement of close to 10 pct. The bank believes that revaluing inventory base liquor from a PB perspective can provide an important reference for the current valuation level. From a PB perspective, Zhejiang Guyuelongshan Shaoxing Wine's approximately 260,000 tons of aged base liquor has a book value of 1.434 billion yuan, with a unit cost of about 5,515 yuan/ton. Under neutral assumptions (15-year aging, 10% annual appreciation), the revalued value is higher than book value, and the stock price may still be in a discounted and undervalued state.
