On October 12, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) announced that it has collaborated with leading index provider S&P Dow Jones Indices to develop and launch the "S&P 500 HKEX Tech 100 Index," providing the market with a cross-market index that combines leading U.S.-listed companies with the largest technology companies listed in Hong Kong by market capitalization. The Hong Kong stock market continues to expand and has attracted a growing concentration of technology and innovation-driven enterprises. Meanwhile, investors are looking to global markets for diversification and new opportunities, driving a significant increase in demand for flexible global investment solutions. Against this backdrop, the S&P 500 HKEX Tech 100 Index tracks the performance of both markets through a single benchmark, combining the growth potential of Hong Kong's technology and innovation enterprises with the scale and diversity of the U.S. large-cap market, allowing investors to allocate more broadly across different regions, sectors, and sources of growth. The index allocates approximately 60% to the HKEX Tech 100 Index and 40% to the S&P 500 Index, with quarterly rebalancing. Wilfred Yiu, Head of Markets at HKEX, said: "Innovation has become an important driver for enterprises to achieve growth and for CKH HOLDINGS investors to capture opportunities. We are pleased to partner with S&P Dow Jones Indices to launch this index, which simultaneously tracks Hong Kong's thriving technology and innovation ecosystem and the U.S. large-cap market, bringing together the complementary strengths of both markets and providing investors with a convenient new avenue for cross-market investment. HKEX will continue to strive to expand index products, develop innovative solutions, and support the sustainable development of the market." Robert Ross, Chief Commercial Officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices, said: "Hong Kong's technology ecosystem is developing rapidly, and investors are seeking growth opportunities with a more global perspective. These trends are driving market demand for innovative benchmark indices. We are delighted to partner with HKEX to develop the S&P 500 HKEX Tech 100 Index, bringing together Hong Kong's vibrant technology industry and leading U.S. large-cap companies into a single, transparent benchmark index. This collaboration demonstrates how index innovation can connect the strengths and opportunities of different markets through a unified and rules-based framework." Specifically, the S&P 500 HKEX Tech 100 Index was launched on September 30, 2026, with the aim of supporting future ETFs tracking the index in qualifying for inclusion in Stock Connect trading. The HKEX Tech 100 Index was launched in December 2025, reflecting the performance of the 100 largest Hong Kong-listed securities by market capitalization that are highly related to six major technology themes: artificial intelligence, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, electric vehicles and smart driving, information technology, internet, and Siasun Robot&Automation. The S&P 500 Index covers 500 leading U.S. companies, accounting for approximately 85% of the total market capitalization of the U.S. investable stock market.
