A-share Closing Review | Three major indices rebound from lows, BSE 50 rises 2.49%, film and media sector surges

On October 9, the three major A-share indices opened lower in the morning and weakened in choppy trading, with the ChiNext Index falling more than 3% at one point intraday, before rebounding from the lows in the afternoon and collectively turning positive. As of the close, the Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.05% to 3813.79 points, the Shenzhen Component Index rose 0.17% to 12641.86 points, the ChiNext Index rose 0.22% to 3043.33 points, the STAR 50 rose 0.07% to 1457.27 points, and the BSE 50 rose 2.49% to 1037.31 points. Combined turnover of the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets was 1,900.540 billion yuan, an increase of 218.413 billion yuan from the previous trading day. In the Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share markets, 3,297 stocks rose, 2,145 fell, and 131 were flat, with 72 hitting the daily limit up and 11 hitting the daily limit down, and gainers accounting for about 59%.
In terms of sectors, digital media, film and cinema lines, publishing, advertising and marketing, planting, and precious metals led the gains; components, copper-clad laminates, electronic chemicals, glass and fiberglass, and wind power equipment led the declines.
Drivers
The Shanghai Composite Index fell to an intraday low of 3754.14 points, down about 1.5% from the previous trading day's close, while the ChiNext Index and STAR 50 fell by as much as 3.42% and 4.55% intraday, respectively. In late trading, the three major indices collectively recovered their losses, while the BSE 50 remained strong throughout the day and closed up 2.49%, leading all major indices. Structurally, film, television and media as well as AI application directions led the gains throughout the day, with digital media (+8.00%), publishing (+7.20%), film and cinema lines (+7.16%), and advertising and marketing (+5.50%) among the top-performing industries.
On the news front, at iQIYI's Autumn Enjoyment Conference on October 9, CEO Gong Yu said AI technology is driving explosive growth in short dramas, breaking down the high barriers of the traditional film and television industry and shortening production cycles; data from Beacon Professional Edition showed that the National Day holiday box office from October 1 to 7 ended at 1.164 billion yuan; in addition, Bona Film Group's domestic first AI hyper-realistic theatrical film "Sanxingdui: Future Past" announced on September 27 that it would be scheduled for release on October 23, making it the first AI-produced theatrical film in China to receive a public screening permit from the China Film Administration.
The agriculture direction strengthened in the afternoon. According to a CCTV Finance report on October 9, monitoring by the National Climate Center showed that a super El Nio event officially formed in September 2026, and the World Meteorological Organization estimated on October 8 that this El Nio would peak in December; retail and other major consumer directions were also active. Reports said Apple asked some suppliers to cut component output for the iPhone 18 Pro series by 15%20%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.4% in overnight U.S. trading.

1. Film and television media: The sector led the gains throughout the day, with AI film and television application directions strengthening collectively. COL Global Co., Ltd. and Mango Excellent Media hit the 20CM daily limit up, while Shanghai Film, Jishi Media, Heilongjiang Publishing&Media Holdings and many other stocks hit the daily limit up.
On the catalyst side, at iQIYI's Autumn Enjoyment Conference on October 9, CEO Gong Yu said that thanks to AI technology development, short dramas have seen explosive growth, and AI also brings opportunities for long-form content, with iQIYI set to use AI to explore new types of content works; data from Beacon Professional Edition showed that the National Day holiday (October 1 to 7) box office ended at 1.164 billion yuan, and box office for the year has reached 30.759 billion yuan; according to Caiwen reports, the DAU of Hongguo Short Drama has surpassed the combined total of "iQIYI, Youku, Tencent Video and Mango TV," and in the first half of 2026 the domestic AI short drama market exceeded 22 billion yuan.
In addition, Bona Film Group's first AI hyper-realistic theatrical film "Sanxingdui: Future Past" announced on September 27 that it would be scheduled for release in theaters nationwide on October 23, making it the first AI-produced theatrical film in China to obtain a public screening permit from the China Film Administration; on October 6, reports said Kuaishou's Kling AI planned to seek a Hong Kong listing as early as 2027, raising at least $1 billion.

Lithium batteries: The battery sector strengthened intraday, with the SW Level 2 "battery" index closing up 2.10%, while the solid-state battery direction mainly showed consecutive daily limit-ups in individual stocks the Juyuan "solid-state battery" concept index rose only 0.36% that day. Among individual stocks, Liaoning Shidai Wanheng posted five consecutive daily limit-ups, Shanghai Zizhu High-Tech Science And Technology four consecutive daily limit-ups, Hunan Lead Power Technology Group two consecutive daily limit-ups, and Jinyuan EP Co.,Ltd. hit the daily limit up.
On the catalyst side, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and six other departments issued the "15th Five-Year Plan" for the development of the new battery industry on September 28, proposing that all-solid-state batteries initially achieve large-scale application by 2030; the Ministry of Finance and two other departments announced on July 17 that from September 1, 2026 to December 31, 2028, sodium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries and other categories would be exempt from consumption tax. Both are existing policies that continue to ferment.
3. Planting: The sector surged sharply in the afternoon. Jinjian Cereals Industry, WanXiang Doneed, and Gansu Dunhuang Seed Group hit the daily limit up, while QIULE SEEDS rose more than 12%. On the catalyst side, according to a CCTV Finance report on October 9, monitoring by the National Climate Center showed that a super El Nio event officially formed in September 2026 and is expected to peak in late autumn or early winter, possibly becoming the strongest El Nio event since systematic monitoring began.
Adjusting sectors
Electronic industry chain directions such as components, copper-clad laminates, PCBs, electronic chemicals, and glass and fiberglass led the declines, while the wind power equipment sector weakened in tandem. Among individual stocks, Goldenmax International and Dajin Heavy Industry hit the daily limit down, Jiangsu Haili Wind Power Equipment Technology and Titan Wind Energy both plunged nearly 10%, and Shandong Sinocera Functional Material and Guangdong Fenghua Advanced Technology were among the top decliners. The above electronic industry chain directions have continued to adjust since late September and again led declines on the day; on the news front, reports said Apple, citing weak demand, asked some suppliers to cut component output for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max by 15%20%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.4% in overnight U.S. trading.
