According to media reports citing people familiar with the matter, Starbucks Corporation (SBUX.US) has been working with advisors in recent months to study a potential acquisition plan for the U.S. Mexican-style restaurant chain Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG.US). After the news emerged, Chipotle Mexican Grill's stock price surged as much as 8.6% intraday on Thursday, while Starbucks Corporation's stock price fell as much as 6.7% intraday, marking its largest intraday drop in more than a year. As of press time, Chipotle Mexican Grill's stock price gain had narrowed to 5.3%, at $32.385. Therefore, the relevant discussions remain highly uncertain, and it is not yet possible to determine whether the two sides will reach a formal transaction. It is worth noting that Starbucks Corporation's current Chief Executive Officer, Brian Niccol, has close ties to Chipotle Mexican Grill.
