Macau Monetary Authority: August resident deposits rose 0.9% month-on-month to MOP 845.3 billion

On October 6, statistics released by the Monetary Authority of Macao show that in August 2026, resident deposits increased month-on-month, while resident loans recorded a decline. Resident deposits rose 0.9% month-on-month to MOP 845.3 billion, while non-resident deposits increased 1.6% to MOP 377.4 billion. At the same time, deposits of the public sector in the banking system increased 1.3% to MOP 274.1 billion. Taken together, total deposits in the banking system rose 1.1% to MOP 1,496.8 billion; among these, the shares of the Macao pataca, Hong Kong dollar, renminbi and US dollar were 18.5%, 45.1%, 10.1% and 24.6% respectively.
Money Supply
Currency in circulation fell 0.2%, while demand deposits rose 0.8%, and M1 therefore increased 0.5% month-on-month. At the same time, quasi-monetary liabilities rose 0.9%, so the broad money supply M2, which comprises M1 and quasi-monetary liabilities, rose 0.9% to MOP 867.8 billion. Analyzed by currency, the shares of the Macao pataca, Hong Kong dollar, renminbi and US dollar in M2 were 32.1%, 43.3%, 8.5% and 14.7% respectively.
Loans
Loans to the local private sector decreased 0.4% month-on-month to MOP 472.2 billion. On the other hand, loans to the external sector rose 1.1% to MOP 565.8 billion. Taken together, total loans in the banking system increased 0.4% to MOP 1,038.0 billion; among these, the shares of the Macao pataca, Hong Kong dollar, renminbi and US dollar were 22.3%, 40.1%, 16.8% and 16.8% respectively.
Operating Ratios
As at the end of August 2026, the overall loan-to-deposit ratio of banks fell from 69.8% at the end of July to 69.3%, and the local resident loan-to-deposit ratio fell from 42.8% to 42.2%. The liquidity ratio, calculated on a one-month and three-month basis, stood at 59.8% and 48.7% respectively. In addition, the non-performing loan ratio remained unchanged month-on-month at 4.4%.
