Driven by a late-summer cryptocurrency rally, Strategy's (MSTR.US) Bitcoin holdings rose in value and recorded unrealized gains, returning to profitability for the first time in four quarters. The company, the world's largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, said its digital assets generated a $21 billion gain in the third quarter of 2026. Bitcoin rose 43% year-over-year in the third quarter.
The accounting standards the company follows require fair value changes in its Bitcoin holdings to be recognized in profit or loss, causing quarterly results to swing by billions of dollars.
According to a filing submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday, Strategy also said it purchased $28.7 million worth of Bitcoin between October 1 and October 4, and repurchased $176 million of STRC preferred stock. The company holds 848,000 Bitcoins, worth approximately $73 billion.
As of press time, Strategy was up more than 2% in early trading.
