The CEO of Hong Kong Investment Corporation Limited (HKIC), Clara Chan, revealed that as of the end of last year, the net internal rate of return of HKIC's investment portfolio reached 14%. Four years since its establishment, the company has transformed from a pure investor into a multi-faceted role, with cumulative investments in over 200 projects. Among them, 11 portfolio companies have successfully listed in Hong Kong, and more than 30 companies plan to submit listing applications in Hong Kong during the remainder of this year.
Clara Chan pointed out that HKIC will proactively seek out potential enterprises and lead investments to boost market confidence. Currently, for every HK$1 invested by HKIC, an average of over HK$8 in long-term capital can be brought in as co-investment. Beyond financial returns, the investments also prioritize benefiting the public, covering areas such as artificial intelligence and green energy technology. In the future, support will be strengthened for frontier sectors including the Northern Metropolis, the Greater Bay Area, and commercial aerospace.
In addition, HKIC has set a global precedent by establishing an offshore RMB venture capital fund, which has already begun investing in projects covering artificial intelligence and brain-computer interfaces, among others. Given Hong Kong's key role as an offshore RMB hub, HKIC will also build a bond investment framework to enhance the innovation and technology financial ecosystem, with specific details to be announced in due course together with partner banks.
Regarding investment strategy, Clara Chan emphasized that "investing early and investing small" is the core principle, closely aligned with the overall development of the country and Hong Kong. She noted that HKIC positions itself as "patient capital" and does not orient itself around short-term market fluctuations, as otherwise it would be difficult to maintain international recognition and attract top innovation and technology talent.
HKIC bears the dual mission of "using capital to attract capital, talent to gather talent, and ecosystem to nurture ecosystem." To cultivate youth, the company will establish a cross-regional innovation and technology platform, linking top universities in Hong Kong, the mainland, Europe, and the Americas for in-depth cooperation.
