Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A.US, BRK.B.US) announced on Friday that 96-year-old Warren Buffett is stepping down as chairman effective immediately, transitioning to chairman emeritus, with his son Howard G. Buffett taking over as chairman. With this, the most legendary investment conglomerate in American business history has completed its final round of power succession. Buffett's chairmanship, spanning more than half a century since 1970, has come to an end, while the CEO role had already been handed to Greg Abel.
This was not an abrupt transition. Howard has served as a Berkshire director since 1993, and signals that he would succeed as chairman had long been in place. Buffett will remain on the board to ensure a smooth transition. In the company's statement, Abel described Buffett's impact on Berkshire and its shareholders as "unprecedented in American business history," and said Howard will serve as the "guardian" of the culture and values Buffett built.
For Howard, his board career will be entirely different. He bears a striking resemblance to his legendary investor father and is well aware that this transition will change his life. For a long time, his life has consisted of frequent global travel for philanthropy and the daily routine of a farmer who personally works the land.
"I've been to about 155 countries, constantly on the move. I went to Ukraine five times in 2022, five times in 2023, and probably four or five times this year. Those trips I won't be taking anymore," Howard said in a 2024 interview with Yahoo Finance.
Howard, 71, is regarded as the "guardian" of the unique Berkshire culture built over decades by his father and longtime lieutenant Charlie Munger. The company itself is a giant that requires professional planning and oversight from the Berkshire board. Its operations range from running BNSF, one of America's most important railroads, to supporting the housing market through homebuilder Clayton Homes.
Howard has an extensive management rsum, having worked in investor relations at commodities company Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM) and served as a director of Coca-Cola Company (KO), his father's favorite beverage and long-term stock investment. (He retired from the Coca-Cola Company board in 2016 after 17 years of service.) He is also chairman and CEO of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, established in 1999.
"I need to keep in mind that I have to serve at Berkshire and bear responsibility. So I think the level of risk in my life today will probably decrease," Howard said in the 2024 interview. "As non-executive chairman, I won't be running the company. My job is to support the future CEO, Greg Abel, to the best of my ability."
